Dr. Amy Maragos

Meet your Therapist

Hi, I’m Dr. Amy

My path to becoming a psychologist has been beautifully unconventional. After working as an accountant and becoming a stay-at-home mom, my life transformed when my second child needed life-saving surgery at six weeks old. Through those challenging weeks in the hospital, surrounded by medical staff and loved ones holding hope with us, I learned a profound lesson: vulnerability is where joy and human connection truly flourish.

This experience, combined with my own transformative journey in therapy, led me back to graduate school to pursue a deeper calling. As a client, I experienced firsthand the power of unconditional positive regard and the healing that comes from having a safe space to explore one's inner world. This inspired me to pursue not only a master's in counseling, but ultimately a doctorate in counseling psychology.

What I've learned from both sides of the therapeutic relationship is that genuine connection requires mutual trust and vulnerability. Sometimes, my role is to hold hope for clients until they can carry it themselves. I believe that understanding someone's story helps their choices and behaviors make sense, and I'm continuously inspired by my clients' resilience and capacity for growth. My goal is to help each person live more consciously and authentically, creating positive ripples throughout our community.

My Specialties

  • Most people have extreme financial stress in their lives and don’t understand how their beliefs about money affect behavior (think overspending, gambling, excessive shopping, etc). Debt is never the problem; it’s always the symptom.

Most therapists don’t have their own money beliefs figured out so money is often not explored in therapeutic spaces. A lot of people have trauma around money either from childhood, job loss, or large debt, etc. that contribute to the way they work with or manage money.

Money is the only other relationship (aside from food) that we can’t go through life without. People who have “money problems” have to learn a different way of navigating their relationship with money much like a person with anorexia or bulimia has to learn a different way to think about and navigate their relationship with food.

  • In my work with depression, I recognize how isolating and overwhelming depression can be. Drawing from both interpersonal process therapy and feminist theory, I help you understand how your past experiences, relationships, and cultural context influence your current struggles. Rather than simply focusing on what's wrong, we'll work to identify your inherent strengths while I hold hope for you until you're ready to carry it yourself. Together, we'll develop concrete tools for managing depression while working toward deeper, lasting change that honors your whole self.

  • I understand how overwhelming anxiety and performance anxiety can be. Together, we'll explore how your past experiences and cultural context might fuel current anxiety patterns, particularly in high-pressure situations. Rather than just managing symptoms, we'll work to understand your unique story and strengthen your authentic voice. I'll hold a safe, judgment-free space where you can explore both vulnerabilities and strengths, helping you move from survival mode toward genuine confidence and self-trust. Together, we'll develop practical tools that align with your personal values and goals.

  • Using interpersonal process therapy, we'll explore how your attachment history influences your relationships today, while considering how your unique background and identities affect these dynamics. Together, we'll create a safe space to understand your patterns, strengthen your authentic voice, and develop deeper, more fulfilling connections. Rather than focusing solely on current conflicts, we'll work to build lasting insights and tools that help you cultivate the meaningful relationships you deserve.

  • I understand that each person's experience is deeply personal and deserves to be honored with care and sensitivity. Together, we'll move at your pace to explore how past experiences impact your present life, while considering how your unique context shapes your healing journey. I create a safe, consistent space where you can process your experiences without judgment, helping you move from survival toward genuine wholeness. Sometimes, my role is to hold hope and trust in your healing until you're ready to carry it yourself. Together, we'll work to help you reclaim your sense of safety, strength, and authentic self.

In any therapeutic process, it is necessary to foster hope in the client by identifying strengths, being genuine, and being realistic.  At times, my role has been to hold hope “in trust” for my clients until they can carry it for themselves. Although I integrate two foundational theories to best serve my clients, this humanistic approach is the core of my therapeutic approach.

My theoretical orientation is grounded in interpersonal process therapy (IPT) and feminist theory. I examine how attachment processes work to unconsciously fuel clients’ feelings, thoughts, and behaviors. Individuals have complex emotional histories and use these unconscious processes to get others to respond in certain ways—much like they did with their primary caregiver to gain comfort and security.

What to Expect:

I am an innate humanist. I believe that the core of human motivation is to be accepted, and there is no greater therapeutic tool than empathy. We all want to be heard, validated, and know that we matter.

Although IPT helps clients understand how their past may be showing up in their present lives, feminist therapy allows me to position treatment within the client’s cultural context. From a feminist lens, I examine how experiences based on the intersections of my clients’ identities (e.g., race, gender, sexual orientation, etc.) influence and shape them.

In addition, I help my clients examine how these external factors may contribute to their presenting problem or lead to maladaptive coping strategies. Furthermore, I aim to create an egalitarian and authentic relationship. In doing so, I include clients in the therapeutic process by helping them understand their current challenges and determine treatment goals and decisions.
